Concept
In her live online performance Transmission, Nezaket Ekici explores the intersection between the real and virtual worlds through the visual language of the QR code—a symbol emblematic of the Internet age. The QR code, a two-dimensional matrix developed in 1994 by Masahiro Hara in Japan, enables instant access to digital content such as text, images, videos, and music. Ekici constructs an oversized QR code measuring 2 x 2 meters by arranging a series of black sculptural objects on a white platform. These three-dimensional elements, while abstract and geometric in appearance, come together to form a functional, machine-readable code. By transforming the flat, digital structure of the QR code into a physical installation, Ekici brings a fragment of the digital world into tangible space. Through this act, she challenges the viewer to consider the nature of digital interfaces. Although a QR code may seem abstract, it represents a precise system of encoded information. Ekici emphasizes the self-referential nature of the Internet—each link leads to another part of the same virtual space, never leaving the digital realm. The performance culminates when the viewers are invited to scan the QR code with their smartphones. Doing so leads them to a linked video, closing the loop between physical presence and digital participation. In this way, Ekici symbolically returns the audience to the virtual world, reflecting on the entanglement between our physical reality and digital existence.
