Over the course of her 20-year career, Nezaket Ekici has performed live in more than 170 cities across 60 countries on four continents. In her performance Personal Map, she constructs a visual and participatory archive of this global journey.
Armed with nails, a hammer, and a red string, Ekici creates an enormous web like a spider -spinning its network onto a white wooden panel. Each thread traces a location where she has performed, ultimately composing a map of over 250 performances. The audience at times becomes part of the action: participants are invited to reenact fragments of past performances and assist in identifying the geographical locations on the map. From a global perspective, Personal Map tells a story not only of one artist’s journey, but of art itself as a transnational force. Ekici suggests that art is both shaped by and contributes to globalization, perhaps even connecting people and cultures to create a borderless space of shared humanity. At SSM in Istanbul, this performance will take on a new dimension. For the first time, Ekici will present Personal Mapover 10 consecutive days, performing 8 hours each day—for a total of 80 hours. The durational aspect gives the audience a unique opportunity to experience her career in real time. The work becomes a living archive, unfolding continuously, with no clear end in sight. Personal Map occupies both time and space. It is a meta-performance—a work about her body of work. It offers insight into her process, her evolution, and the essence of performance art itself: presence, endurance, and the intimate exchange between artist and audience.
