Concept
In the performance, “pars pro toto”, the artist appears in a work apron, surrounded by six electric kettles, a steam iron, and a large ice block (50 x 50 x 50 cm) resting on a metal base. The ice sits atop a perforated plate, allowing the meltwater to drip into a collecting basin below (capacity: approx. 6 liters), which is fitted with a drain valve. The scene is illuminated by spotlights, while a microphone amplifies the rhythmic sound of water splashing into the basin, turning it into an acoustic backdrop for the unfolding action. The artist begins to iron the surface of the ice, releasing bursts of warm steam. The ice melts slowly, drop by drop, as gravity pulls the water down through the holes. She scrubs the block with a cloth, absorbing excess water, which she then wrings out into the basin. This water is poured into the kettles and brought to a boil. The hot water is then poured back onto the ice to accelerate its melting—only to be collected again via the drain, and the cycle begins anew. She repeats these processes—ironing, heating, pouring, absorbing, collecting—in a continuous loop. The artist works within a closed energy and water system, relying only on her physical effort and the transformation of heat to dissolve the ice block completely. The performance is a quiet yet powerful meditation on climate change, shaped and driven by human hands. The closed-loop system becomes a symbolic stand-in (pars pro toto) for global human activity: a relentless repetition of consumption, transformation, and consequence. The amplified drip of melting ice becomes a metronome of loss. Ultimately, the message is unmistakable: the ice is melting—and it’s melting faster and faster. (Text Edited: Jono Wang Chu)
