Concept
First performed in 2012 in Torun, Poland, the eponymous “Imagine, 2012” is based on “Flamenco”, which is known as “crying the pain away” in Andalusian culture. And it is shaped by a ritual of flamenco, which Ekici heard while she was in Spain. Spanish flamenco instructors guide their students to imagine an apple tree. Students instantly pick up an apple from this imaginary tree, take the apple to their mouth, and throw it away roughly. This rhythm is reproduced in the mind over and over again. Ekici disillusions and embodies the physical rhythm of this woman-centred dance with the act of apple picking. Even though this dance of subculture highlights loneliness and isolation, Nezaket Ekici’s performance requires the audiences’ participation inherently, just like her other identical performances. The performance addresses Nezaket Ekici’s personal narrative, her nomadic life experience, and the old metaphor of ‘expulsion from paradise’ as well. (Text by Derya Yücel)
