Concept
The artist is kneeling in a pile of freshly slaughtered pig meat. Because of her German-Turkish origin, she learned from her Islamic education that pork is bad, that it is not to be touched or eaten. In the performance she wears an eye protection and rubber gloves to be save. She holds chunks of meat in his hand and smells it. You can hear her smelling and inhaling through a microphone loudly throughout the room. The Croatian population is over 80% Roman Catholic and Serbian Orthodox to five percent. Muslims are the minority with one percent. The German-Turkish artist refers to her Turkish and Muslim origin. For the first time in Croatia, she has not seen anything about this country. She brings her own identity in to make visible the conflict between the religions, Christianity and Islam. The eating of pork is forbidden by Islam, like in Judaism and early Christianity. The Koran bans pork in four places directly at: (2.173) (5.3) (6.145) (16.115). The reasons for the bans are varied and sometimes go back to sanitation. But partialy prohibition is irrational, only used for demarcation to other religions. The artist deals with pork to find out what is bad about it. The work refers to her earlier work "No Pork but Pig," from 2004, in which she tries to become friend with a real pig in an artificial enclosure for several hours.
