Concept
The "Personal Map-Cleaning Tattoo" video performance 2020 is based on the Live Performance „Work in Progress- Personal Map“, which the artist presented at the Sakip Sabanci Museum in Istanbul from 30.1.-2.9.2020. For the 80-hour performance, the artist chronologically applied all the performances she has performed worldwide since 2001 to her chest, legs, arms and hands, with the year, place and title. Since it is almost impossible to keep all of the approximately 300 performances on 4 continents since 2001 in mind, the tattoo-like inscription on her body serves as a reminder. At the same time, however, it also shows on her body what she has achieved artistically. In a symbolic way the tattoo writing becomes one with her body and an expression of her artistic world of ideas. The artist did not wash off the writing tattoo applied to her body for 10 days. On the 11th day and after the end of the performance, she decided to go to the Hamam in Istanbul and have herself professionally cleaned by a Hamam master. She was interested to find out how the tattoo - which she felt had become embedded in her body - could be washed off again. The video shows the process of cleaning and you hear stories from the hammam master about the craft of cleaning and her life as a hammam master.
