Concept
In her video performance "Kaffeeklatsch", Ekici refers to the German ritual of "coffee and cake". Between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., many German families take time to meet and share: they drink coffee together, eat cake and talk. For many people, the coffee time is like a ritual in which they surprise each other with refined cakes and have good conversations in a relaxed atmosphere (German Gemütlichkeit). If you look into the history of coffee gossip, you can quickly see that coffee gossip in the 16th and 17th centuries was a counter-movement to the men's world with the emergence of the bourgeoisie. The "Kränzchen" (coffee circle), as it was also called, served the women to exchange among themselves and thus enjoy a piece of freedom that until then had been reserved for men in social circles. In a sense, the Kaffeeklatsch can thus be regarded as the beginning of the women's equal rights movement. The artist Nezaket Ekici plays with this image of the coffee gossip and transfers it to herself as a migrant, grown up in Germany; combining it with her question as an integrated German about belonging to German society. She wonders what her own German tradition is - which leads to the general question of what German tradition actually is. In order to answer these questions, Ekici has dealt with traditional German costumes (Trachten) and staged herself. In the video performance, for example, one sees 3women at a table performed by Ekici herself, a woman in Black Forest costume, a woman in Spreewald costume and a woman in Thuringian costume. The three costumes stand for the south, north and middle of Germany. It is all about articulation, gestures and facial.
