"Bollenhut "
Videoperformance 2018
In her video performance "Bollenhut", Ekici refers to the traditional Black Forest costume and the hat with balls of wool. For her performance she uses an incorrect copy, a fake doll from China. The original costume and the costume of the doll don't have much in common. Since the Middle Ages, the traditional Bollenhut costume in the Black Forest has had the function of distinguishing between married and unmarried women. While single women wore 14 red balls of wool on their hats, married women wore black balls of wool. The artist Nezaket Ekici deconstructs the traditional meaning of the Bollen hat by dissolving the Bollen into its threads in her video performance with the help of a machine that symbolizes modernity. In a certain sense, she also dissolves the traditional definition and stigmatization of women as married and unmarried.
In concrete terms, the wool threads that make up the balls of wool on the hat are wound up by a motor- driven construction that hangs above her, until the balls of wool have disappeared: A liberation in the symbolic sense.
